Understanding IPO Listing Performance 2026

What Listing Gains Tell You — and What They Don't

The listing gain is the percentage difference between an IPO's issue price and its listing-day opening price on BSE or NSE. A positive listing gain means investors who got allotment on application could have sold at listing for a profit; a negative listing gain (also called a listing discount) means the stock opened below issue price. Across Indian IPO history, the average Mainboard listing gain hovers around 15–25% in normal markets, with wide year-to-year variance based on market sentiment, sector cycles, and overall liquidity. SME IPOs are far more volatile — they can list 50–100%+ higher in bullish phases or list at discounts in correction phases.

How GMP Accuracy Varies by Segment

The Grey Market Premium (GMP) is the unofficial pre-listing price spread that investors track as a directional signal. Historically, Mainboard IPO GMP correlates with actual listing price within a 10–20% margin in stable markets — meaning a GMP of Rs 50 over issue price typically translates to a listing gain of Rs 40–60. SME IPO GMP is far less reliable: lower trading volume in the grey market makes the signal noisier, and last-minute speculative spikes are common. Use GMP as one of several inputs, not as a forecast.

What Drives Strong Listing Performance

Looking across listed IPOs on this page, the consistent winners share most of these traits:

  • Strong subscription — typically 10x+ overall subscription, with QIB above 5x
  • Reputed anchor investors — domestic mutual funds and FIIs participating ahead of the public issue
  • Reasonable valuation — issue P/E close to or below listed industry peers
  • Healthy financials — revenue and profit growth in the 2–3 years preceding the issue
  • Stable or rising GMP through the bidding window, not a last-minute spike
  • Favourable broader market — Nifty/Sensex trending positive in the listing week

Why Some IPOs Disappoint at Listing

The IPOs that list flat or in discount usually have one or more of these issues: aggressive valuation (issue priced significantly above industry peers without justification), selling shareholders dominating the issue (large Offer-for-Sale component with little fresh capital flowing into the company), weak fundamentals masked by one-off boosts, declining sector sentiment, or simply poor market conditions on listing day. The "Avg Listing Gain" stat at the top of this page hides these cases — always click through to individual IPOs to see who outperformed and who underperformed, then study why.

Using This Performance Data

The table above lists every IPO that listed in the selected period along with its actual listing gain and recommendation accuracy (where available). Sort by columns to find best/worst performers. Compare the recommendation column with actual gains to gauge prediction accuracy of our data-driven engine. The monthly chart shows whether listing gains were trending up or down across the period — useful when timing your IPO applications relative to broader market cycles.

Listing gain percentages are computed as (Listing Price − Issue Price) / Issue Price × 100. All data is sourced from BSE, NSE, and registrar disclosures. None of this constitutes investment advice.
