What is IPO GMP (Grey Market Premium)?
GMP (Grey Market Premium) is the unofficial premium at which IPO shares trade in the grey market before listing on BSE or NSE. A positive GMP suggests the IPO may list at a premium, while a negative GMP indicates a potential discount. For example, if an IPO has an issue price of Rs 200 and a GMP of Rs 50, the expected listing price is Rs 250 — a 25% premium.
Mainboard vs SME IPO GMP — Key Differences
GMP behaves very differently across the two segments. We follow every IPO through to listing day, so rather than describe the gap, here is what 147 IPOs with a recorded pre-listing GMP show:
| Mainboard | SME | |
|---|---|---|
| IPOs tracked | 47 | 100 |
| GMP predicted the direction correctly | 80.9% | 56% |
| Average gap between GMP-implied and actual listing price | 5.7% | 9.8% |
For SME issues, GMP called the direction right barely more often than a coin toss. A thinner grey market means a handful of trades can move the premium, and late spikes often fade by listing day — so treat SME GMP as sentiment rather than a forecast. Mainboard GMP is materially more dependable, but the average gap above still makes it an indicator, not a price. Use the Type filter to view either segment on its own, and pair GMP with subscription multiples and company fundamentals.
How to Read the GMP Table
The table above shows live GMP data for all active IPOs in India — including upcoming, open, closed, and recently listed IPOs. Each row shows the current grey market premium in rupees, the percentage premium over issue price, and the estimated listing price. The subscription column (Sub) shows the total subscription multiple for open and closed IPOs. Click on any IPO row to view the full GMP history chart and detailed analysis.
Why Track IPO GMP?
Tracking GMP helps investors gauge market sentiment before an IPO lists. A rising GMP trend over the subscription period usually indicates strong demand, while a declining GMP may signal weakening interest. However, GMP is unofficial — not regulated by SEBI — and should be used alongside subscription data, company financials, and valuations for informed decision-making. Use our IPO detail pages to see the complete picture for each IPO.
How accurate has IPO GMP actually been?
Across the 147 IPOs we tracked from bidding through to listing, GMP pointed the right way 63.9% of the time, and 85.7% of listings landed within 20% of the GMP-implied price. The average gap was 8.5%. Accuracy improves closer to listing day and when strong institutional (QIB) subscription backs the premium; it is weakest on SME issues and on late spikes driven by retail demand. Every figure comes from our own listing performance tracker, which records issue price, GMP and actual listing price for each IPO we cover.
